A Tourist’s Diary: Eyüp Sultan Mosque and Pierre Loti Hill

I had an unforgettable experience today in Istanbul! I started my day by visiting the Eyüp Sultan Mosque, which deeply impressed me with its historical atmosphere and spiritual aura.

This mosque, built by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II in 1458, just 5 years after the conquest of Istanbul, takes its name from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (Eyüp Sultan), a close companion of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who is believed to have been martyred here during the Arab siege of Constantinople in the 7th century. The tomb next to the mosque is the tomb of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari. This makes the Eyüp Sultan Mosque one of the holiest places in Istanbul.

The cemetery in the mosque courtyard was also quite impressive. It is said that many important figures from the Ottoman period to the present day are buried here.

Then I took the cable car and went up to Pierre Loti Hill. Along the way, I watched the magnificent view of the Golden Horn. When I reached the top, I was mesmerized by the breathtaking panorama of Istanbul. The historical peninsula on one side, modern skyscrapers on the other… The view was so beautiful that I could sit and watch for hours.

Who is Pier Loti

Pierre Loti Hill takes its name from the French writer Pierre Loti, who came to Istanbul in the 19th century and frequently visited a café on this hill. Loti wrote many of his works while enjoying the view of Istanbul from this hill.

I had a Turkish coffee and simit break at the historical café located on Pierre Loti Hill. After this enjoyable break, I walked on the walking trail on the hill and enjoyed the city.

Eyüp Sultan Mosque and Pierre Loti Hill are a wonderful place that offers both the historical and natural beauty of Istanbul. I believe that every tourist who comes here should definitely see these two places.
